Junior Curriculum
During their junior year, each resident develops a set of learning sessions themed around topic that they are passionate about. We participate in these sessions together as a group, and are enriched by our colleagues in a truly special way. Some examples are below.
DEsign Thinking - Shubha Bhat, '16
Shubha led a truly hands-on curriculum teaching the group about the intersection of design thinking and clinical medicine. We were given a design challenge – Medication Literacy – and literally traveled all around Boston...from our own Atrius and DPM offices to the China Town loft housing Design Agency Mad*Pow to the Harvard Innovation Lab in pursuit of inspiration. Shubha brought consultants from successful and prominent design consulting agencies such as IDEO, Diagram and Mad*Pow to lead us through exercises in empathy, problem exploration, ideation and prototyping. While we may not have created the next million dollar startup design idea, we all learned incredible lessons about empathy for our patients, creativity in problem solving, the joys of teamwork and so much more.
Disruption in Healthcare - Craig Monsen, '16
“Every system is perfectly designed to achieve exactly the results it gets.” This was the motivation for Craig’s curriculum in Healthcare Disruption. Craig recognized, as so many of us do, that many areas of our healthcare system are broken and yet we live and work in an industry that has calcified and developed mechanisms to maintain the status quo. Craig organized a curriculum to introduce us to innovative and inspiring change-leaders in the medical community (both “disruptors” and “incumbents”), focusing on popular targets of disruption such as payment reform, health IT and retail. We were lucky enough to hear from a few of our own renowned HVMA grads who are true movers and shakers in their fields – including Tom Lee (Class of 1997), the founder of One Medical and Epocrates, Tom Sequist (Class of 2002), the Chief Quality and Safety Officer of Partners Healthcare, and Emily Maxson (Class of 2014), Medical Director of Aledade ACO. Other Brigham Housestaff Alum who brought their amazing experiences to the discussion included Erika Pabo (Chief Medical Officer at Hale Health), Daniel Stein (Director of Medical and Clinical Services at Walmart) and Krishna Yeshwant (General Partner in Google Ventures).
disabilities in Healthcare - Lexie Graham, '17
I wanted to create a curriculum on the care of individuals with disabilities primarily because of my personal experience as the sister of a wonderful and inspiring young woman with Down syndrome. I have been amazed (and saddened) by the lack of education that I have received in medical school and residency thus far about understanding and caring for people who are differently abled both intellectually and physically. As part of my curriculum I was able to share my own experiences as a family advocate for an individual with an intellectual disability and I was also able to invite truly amazing physician leaders who are renowned researchers, clinicians, educators and advocates dedicated to reducing healthcare disparities and promoting the health of persons with disabilities including Dr. Lisa Iezzoni (renowned researcher, advocate and educator in the field of health care experiences and outcomes of persons with disabilities), Dr. Bruce Kastin (adult neurologist with the MGH Lurie Center for Autism) and Dr. Cheri Blauwet (PM&R physician, former Olympian and Paralympian and advocate for disability rights).
