What is Atrius Health?

Atrius Health is a nonprofit multidisciplinary group medical practice that provides both primary and specialty care across 34 locations to 740,000 people. It is the largest primary care provider in the state of Massachusetts. The largest medical practice within Atrius Health is Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates (HVMA), which originated as part of the Harvard Community Health Plan, an integrated delivery system established by the dean of Harvard Medical School in the 1960s. Our residency has roots in the HVMA practice (many former alumni will refer to it as the “HVMA residency”), but we are now fortunate to be part of the larger Atrius Health family.

Atrius is a leader in:

Primary care quality: It was one of the first practices in the country to participate in Medicare’s Pioneer Accountable Care Organization (ACO) program. In 2017, it ranked first in overall quality among all ACOs participating in the Pioneer ACO program.

Primary care delivery: With an organizational focus on efficiency, Atrius sites offer comprehensive care, with co-located services including imaging, specialty consultation, and pharmacy, allowing residents to focus on delivering care rather than overcoming administrative hurdles.

Primary care innovation: HVMA was the first ambulatory group in the country to receive the US government’s highest designation for electronic health record adoption. That legacy has continued on as part of the Atrius culture. In 2015, Atrius created an innovation center to incubate new approaches to primary care delivery.

Population health: Atrius serves a diverse patient population both across and within clinic sites and has well-established systems to facilitate population management.

Atrius’ implementation of Epic has been heavily optimized for primary care. For example, by nature, annual visits require extensive review of prior clinical data; our EHR automates much of this process so that I can focus on getting to know my patient, not digging through the chart.
