What is the department of population medicine (DPM)?

The Department of Population Medicine works to improve the health of individuals through teaching and research focused on populations and systems affecting their care, and is a key partner and supporter of our primary care program.

DPM faculty work to enrich health care systems through research and teaching, collaborating domestically and globally on the evaluation of health care policy, improvement in care delivery, and prevention. Projects include studying issues of medication safety and effectiveness, obesity prevention, nutrition, maternal and child health, vaccination policy, healthcare disparities, uses of electronic medical record technology, and cancer screening and prevention.

DPM's affiliation with Harvard Medical School and Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, a large health plan with diverse enrollees across New England, provides unique opportunities to integrate population medicine directly into real-world healthcare settings.

Residents in the BWH-HVMA/Atrius Health Primary Care Program have the opportunity to participate in DPM efforts, and to leverage the remarkable resources of DPM, BWH and Atrius Health to design projects of their own.
